Ontonagon MI-VINE Availability
Michigan runs its own version of the service, called MI-VINE. It offers confidential custody and court notifications. It also connects to the national VINELink interface. Access works around the clock. There is also a toll-free line, 1-800-770-7657. Where county data participates, jail events like release, transfer, or escape can trigger a notice. Court events may also appear where those records are available.
Local public material never confirms Ontonagon County participation. The sheriff page says nothing about the Ontonagon County Jail feeding VINE. No local SAVIN page or county-specific instructions exist. Test it before trusting it. Search Michigan, and see whether an Ontonagon source record comes back. Call the jail when it does not.
The official Michigan MI-VINE page shown here lays out the statewide service. It routes users to VINELink.

That state page is authoritative for the program itself. It still cannot prove that any given Ontonagon County booking sits in the live data.
Search VINELink for Ontonagon Custody
The VINELink search itself is anonymous. Start with a precise name or whatever identifier fields the interface offers. Spelling matters. A similar name alone proves nothing about identity. Before trusting a result, check the source agency and the custody location. If the Ontonagon County Jail appears, compare the record against details you already know from the arrest or from family contact.
- Open VINELink and choose Michigan as the state.
- Select the person or offender search shown by the live interface.
- Enter the full name or available identifier. Try a careful spelling variant if the first search returns nothing.
- Compare every likely match by source agency, facility, and the limited identity details shown.
- Read the custody status and last update, if displayed, as a point-in-time report.
- Call the Ontonagon County Jail at 906-884-4901 when no record appears or a result conflicts with direct information.
The VINELink interface captured here is where you select Michigan and check a person.

The live controls can change, so follow the current labels rather than expecting a fixed county form.
Note: A same-name result must be matched to the correct source and facility before any custody conclusion is drawn.
What Ontonagon VINELink May Show
Fields depend on the source record and the interface at the moment. VINELink is a notification system. It is not a booking file or photo archive. An Ontonagon result may be thinner than a sheriff record. No field should be promised sight unseen.
| Possible field | What it means | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Name or identifier | Helps distinguish the person in the source system. | Names can be misspelled or shared. |
| Source agency | Identifies the agency supplying the record. | Confirm that it relates to Ontonagon County. |
| Custody location | Shows a reported facility or supervision source. | Transfer data may lag. |
| Custody status | Reports held, released, transferred, or another state offered. | It is a point-in-time status. |
| Notification options | Shows phone, email, or text methods available for that record. | Options depend on the live system. |
| Event information | May describe release, transfer, escape, or court changes. | Not every arrest or event is covered. |
The service also does not replace a court register of actions. A disposition is the final court outcome. Turn to MiCOURT or the local court for that later stage. Keep the custody alert separate from the legal result.
Register for Ontonagon Custody Alerts
Pick the right matching person and source record first. Then choose a notification option. Michigan's materials describe phone, email, and text alerts. Phone registration uses a four-digit PIN. That PIN lets the recipient acknowledge the automated call and stop repeat attempts. The state brochure notes that email and text registration skip the phone PIN entirely.
- Open the notification or registration control attached to the verified person record.
- Select phone, email, or text, subject to what the current screen offers.
- Enter the destination carefully and review it before submitting.
- Create and retain the four-digit PIN when registering for phone calls.
- Save the confirmation or registration details without posting them publicly.
- Update or cancel the registration through VINELink when contact information changes.
Alerts cost nothing under MI-VINE. Confidential does not mean infallible, though. A message can arrive after the event, and a data problem can delay it further. Never let an alert be the sole basis for an urgent safety decision; call the jail or emergency services as the circumstances demand.
Why Ontonagon Results Go Missing
A blank result can mean several things. Ontonagon County may not participate right now. A fresh booking may not have reached the state service yet. The person may already be released. The name may be entered differently. Another agency may hold them. Or a transfer may have moved the record somewhere else. One empty search cannot sort those causes apart, so pick up the phone.
Call the Ontonagon County Sheriff's Department at 906-884-4901. Ask whether the person is currently held, booked and released, transferred, or never accepted. Give the full name and date of birth privately if needed. The office sits at 620 Conglomerate, Ontonagon, MI 49953. The county page lists no separate records line. Ask for the jail or FOIA contact.
For a brand-new event, try the Ontonagon arrests last 24 hours route. It is the direct same-day check. If the person is already out, request the booking record. A current-custody service may no longer answer that question. Once a charge reaches court, follow the disposition through the court record.
Note: No result can reflect lag, release, transfer, spelling, another facility, or lack of county participation.
Ontonagon Custody System Boundaries
MI-VINE is not a universal national locator. Michigan's deployment does not guarantee federal or immigration custody coverage. Someone sentenced to Michigan state prison belongs in the MDOC Offender Tracking Information System. OTIS tracks state correctional custody and supervision. It does not cover a fresh Ontonagon County booking.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons runs its own inmate locator. Federal pretrial prisoners may sit under U.S. Marshals arrangements with thinner public detail. Immigration detention works through the ICE Online Detainee Locator and related federal contacts. None of these sources is an Ontonagon County jail roster. Each one covers a different custody situation.
- Booked
- Accepted and processed by a jail after arrest.
- Released
- No longer held at that facility, although the booking record may still exist.
- Transferred
- Moved to another jail, prison, hospital, or authority.
- Sentenced
- Ordered by a court to a penalty after a case disposition.
- Disposition
- The recorded court outcome, which may differ from the booking charge.
Want the fuller map? The Ontonagon County recent-arrests hub sorts it all out. County booking records, court files, state prison data, and federal sources each get their own lane.
Verify Ontonagon Alert Events
Treat any alert as a nudge to double-check, never as the full record. When a release notice arrives, call the jail and ask why. The reason may be bond, a court order, a transfer, or something else on file. A transfer notice means you should confirm the receiving agency. Do that before jumping to a different locator. Escape notices are different. Follow official safety instructions and leave the rest to law enforcement. Never try to find or detain anyone yourself.
Save the details as you go. Note the notification time, the source name, and any confirmation number the service gives you. Write down whom the sheriff's office pointed you toward and when the status was confirmed. That small paper trail pays off later. It can reconcile a court entry or a second alert that seems to conflict. Just as important, it keeps the two accounts straight. It separates what VINELink reported from what Ontonagon County Jail confirmed directly.
MI-VINE can also send court-event notifications in some places. Read each label with care. A hearing notice is not a custody update. A disposition notice is not the same as release from jail. For docket questions, call the court named in the event. For physical custody questions, call the jail.
Custody Does Not Prove Guilt
A VINE status answers one question only: where is this person right now? It says nothing about how the case ends. Charges get changed, and cases take turns nobody expected. So a release alert, a transfer alert, or a custody result is never a stand-in for the case file itself.
Use two sources. When identity or status matters, verify it with the office that booked the person. When the outcome matters, pull the court disposition. That habit prevents a common mix-up: reading an entry into or out of custody as the final word on a case.
